Room to Spread His Wings – Spotlight on Steven

Steven was looking for a company that would take a chance on him when he dropped his resume off in person at the front desk of XPERTECHS’ Columbia, Maryland headquarters. His in-person tactic could either bomb, with his resume going immediately into the recycling bin, or help him stand out.
What happened was that his resume went straight to Mike Mellott, President of XPERTECHS. The conversations that followed revealed that this wasn’t just a company he found on Google Maps. The way they talked showed they were knowledgeable, and this would be a place where he could both contribute and learn.
“I thought, this is a place where I want to work because I could tell I could learn so much here,” Steven explained. “I felt this was going to be a right fit.”
Taking the Initiative and Contributing Ideas for Improvement

Mike and the team agreed. Steven started at XPERTECHS as a Deployment Technician. It was a good starting point that would let both Steven and the company see what he could do.
In this role, Steven configured and set up new computers, spending part of his time at client sites delivering equipment and interacting with the people who would use it. He had a knack for making clients smile and helping end users feel confident about their new setups.
As he settled into his job, Steven saw an opportunity to improve the computer deployment process. He created documentation and runbooks to help others deliver a repeatable, seamless experience. Justin Ozol, Director of Managed Services, noticed Steven’s initiative.
“Within a relatively short time of meeting Steven, it was apparent he was a confident, capable and ambitious team member,” recalled Justin. “He started on our Deployment team with more experience than we usually see but was a little stuck within the confines of that team’s responsibilities. After learning more about what he did before joining us, it was apparent that if we gave him a little room to spread his wings, he would be able to contribute more.”
Environment That Nurtures Teamwork and Collaboration
As Steven transitioned from his role in deployment to Service Desk Specialist, his daily activities changed but his opportunities to learn, collaborate and contribute continued.
“If you know what you’re talking about and can back it up, people listen here,” Steven said. “If it makes sense and helps our clients, it gets implemented.”
Steven valued the culture at XPERTECHS, where good ideas get traction regardless of whose desk they come from. He also appreciated that the people around him operated at the same speed he did. When someone got slammed with tickets, others stepped in. When someone hit a ceiling in their troubleshooting, it became a collaboration instead of a “get out of my way, I’ve got it” situation.
Work-Life Balance Has Never Been Better
In this line of work, there are some days when team members have to put in more effort than usual, but XPERTECHS is committed to respecting employees’ personal lives. Steven’s motto when someone needs help is “how can I help?” He’s more than willing to do whatever needs to be done for a client or coworker. At the same time, his work-life balance has never been better.
“The company has not only helped me professionally, but also from a personal perspective as I’ve been able to better myself from my experiences here,” Steven explained. “I’m glad they gave me the opportunity to show what I could offer. I don’t see myself going anywhere else at this point.”
XPERTECHS feels the same. Steven brings meticulous attention to detail to whatever he’s doing, whether he’s documenting a process or solving a problem no one’s seen before. He’s become the kind of generalist the team can throw into almost any situation, confident he’ll either figure it out or find the right person who can.
It’s exactly what happens when you give someone room to spread their wings—they don’t just fly, they lift others at the same time.
